KATUBEDDA-MORATUWA, SRI LANKA.
Marco
Polo considered Sri Lanka the finest island of its size in all the world, and
all visitors agree after exploring the country's fabled delights. There is
something to satisfy everybody's desires or fancy -
Golden Beaches - The coastal
stretch south of Colombo (which includes the suburbs of Katubedda and Moratuwa),
its capital, offers palm-lined sandy expanses as far as the eye can see.
Culture and Traditions - The
country has a history of over 2500 years and its own culture held sacred by its
inhabitants. Kandyan dances, a perahera ( procession) with elephants and
decorated carts of devotees of its many diverse religions - Buddhism,
Christianity, Islam and Hinduism, Marriage Ceremonies etc.
Ruins
and Ancient Cities - Ancient and inspiring architecture in the cities of
Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, that once governed the country, to satisfy that
inner archaeologist. The ruins of civilization of bygone eras devastated by
invaders or left to ruin due to pestilence and sickness.
Then
there's the natural wealth for which Sri Lanka is rightly renowned - it flora
and fauna, the wonderful climate that can vary as you travel the country, the
picturesque waterfalls and rivers that flow from the hill-country resulting in
luxurient vegetation that gives the land an emerald hue and breath taking
sceanery. Head for the hill country to escape the heat of the plains, where the
coast fades away to reveal gorgeous rolling hills often carpeted with tea
plantations. The entire island is teeming with bird life and exotics like
elephants and leopards are not uncommon. The people are friendly, the food is
delicious and costs are low - indeed a Paradise for those fortunate to inherit
this land and the tourists who venture into the country.
